China Institute of International Studies (CIIS) is the think tank of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It conducts research and analysis, which focuses primarily on medium and long-term policy issues of strategic importance, particularly those concerning international politics and world economy. It also carries out research and offers policy recommendations on major events and pressing issues.

The Institute currently has 8 research departments, namely Department for International and Strategic Studies, Department for American Studies, Department for Asia-Pacific Studies, Department for European Studies, Development for Developing Countries Studies, Department for European-Central Asian Studies, Department for World Economy and Development Studies and Department for Latin America and Caribbean Studies.

The Research Center for the Belt and Road Initiative was established in July 2014 to strengthen the research on the Belt and Road Initiative and providing intellectual support for its advancement. The main task of the center is to conduct basic research in the field related to the Belt and Road Initiative, to carry out think-tank exchanges among countries alongside the Belt and Road, and to engage in public diplomacy focusing on the Belt and Road Initiative.
